Can Murdoch’s Wall Street Journal Chief Survive Hacking Scandal?

July 06, 2011 11:06 am ET by Eric Boehlert

Les Hinton, CEO of the Dow Jones Company, publisher the Wall Street Journal, once again finds himself hounded by the the growing phone hacking scandal that’s now consuming Rupert Murdoch’s News Corp.

The stunning revelation this week that Murdoch’s News of The World minions allegedly hacked not just the voicemails of celebrities, athletes and members of the royal family, but also a murdered schoolgirl’s voicemails, has catapulted the long-simmering story in Britain where Parliament scheduled emergency hearings for today.

Murdoch’s now facing extraordinary media and political pressure and may be forced to fire a handful of his top executives, especially if he wants to see his acquisition of the satellite television company BSkyB gain final approval from the British government.

One key News Corp. figure now under immense pressure is Rebekah Brooks, who edited News of The World when the murdered schoolgirl’s voicemail was hacked. (Brooks denies having any knowledge of the hack.) Hinton is also under renewed scrutiny because the longtime Murdoch confidant was executive chairman of Murdoch's newspapers in Britain at the time when the alleged rampant hacking attacks took place.

Also, Hinton oversaw the initial News Corp. investigation into the allegations and found no evidence of widespread wrongdoing within the company. It’s an investigation that, in light of recent developments, now looks to have been incompetent at best, and a fraud at worst.

Notes The Week:

If it were to reach up, through Rebekah Brooks and [former Murdoch editor] Andy Coulson, to their former executive chairman, Les Hinton, it is likely that Rupert Murdoch, already heartily sick of the whole mess surrounding his British Sunday tabloid, would be forced to take action at his most prized possession, Dow Jones/Wall Street Journal, where Hinton is now CEO.

And no, in its coverage of the News Corp. hacking story today, the WSJ did not mention its CEO’s connection to the scandal.

or did you mean the way Dan was smeared and the only narrative allowed in the papers and on TV was the one approved of by KKKarl Rove?

seriouisly, trying to claim parts of one of the pages "looked" like it was using proportional spacing is just dumb. If that was being used it would be on ALL of the pages

Also, Hinton oversaw the initial News Corp. investigation into the allegations and "found no evidence of widespread wrongdoing at the company."

And exactly how are we defining "widespread wrongdoing"? More than 300 incidents of cell phone hacking...fewer than a dozen? Enquiring minds want to know...

In this country, News Corpse would be charged w/ obstruction of justice and evidence tampering and possibly lots of other charges maybe even felony murder since they may have jeaopardized the investigation and possibly caused the girl to be murdered

IMO, this story reveals much about Rupert Murdoch and News Corpse. Scooping a story about a kidnapped (and potentially still alive) when NOTW hacked her phone. A corporation that is indifferent to its own criminality will have no qualms about spreading complete propaganda. What's next advocating assasination?

Where are the wingnuts defending this? I'm curious about how they're going to justify the hacking. Lone wolves? A conspiracy against Murdoch? Not really that bad? They were just investigating? What will they claim?

This just gets better and better....or more disgusting by the day

Todays revelations in the UK press say that there is potential evidence that NoW hacked the phones of dead servicemen who were killed in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Im a Brit and I can assure you that this will kill Ruperts empire dreams stone dead. His papers will hit the skids, nobody will want to advertise with them, and nobody will be buying them. Thanks to his close links this will also see David Cameron being evicted from the PMs job at the next election.

Maybe you US cousins should start looking at what his shabby crew have been up to over there in the USA.....
