Right-Wing Media Attack American Jews For Not Turning On Obama

May 27, 2011 4:51 pm ET by Adam Shah

The right-wing media is sure that President Obama betrayed Israel and "sided with the terrorists" with his restatement of U.S. policy that the Israelis and Palestinians should come to a peace agreement that results in a "secure Israel" and "viable Palestine" with "borders ... based on the 1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps so that secure and recognized borders are established for both states."

But a funny thing happened. American Jews -- 78 percent of whom voted for Obama in the 2008 election -- didn't immediately rise up against the president. So the conservative media found their next target for attack: American Jews.

On May 23, Glenn Beck called Obama's statement an "absolute betrayal" but said "the Jewish community seems to be giving him a pass yet again ... How is that possible?" One of his sidekicks said the reaction of the Jewish community was "unbelievable."

On May 26, Ben Shapiro published a piece on CNS News arguing that Jews who support Obama are "Jews In Name Only." Shapiro wrote:

In 2008, Obama grabbed 78 percent of the Jewish vote. Even the most wildly optimistic polling today shows that Obama's support remains high among Jews. It's a result that Republicans simply can't understand - why do so many Jews continue to support a president who has shown time and again that he stands against the State of Israel?

[...]

The answer is deceptively simple: the Jews who vote for Obama are, by and large, Jews In Name Only (JINOs). They eat bagels and lox; they watch "Schindler's List"; they visit temple on Yom Kippur - sometimes. But they do not care about Israel. Or if they do, they care about it less than abortion, gay marriage and global warming.

And then on May 27, on Andrew Breitbart's BigPeace.com, blogger Dan Friedman trumpeted a Jerusalem Post poll finding low support for President Obama in Israel and declared that "Israeli Jews [Are] Not Nearly As Sick As USA Jews." (I wonder whether Friedman will also turn on Israeli Jews when he sees a Haaretz poll of Israelis finding that "only 20 percent saw [Obama] as hostile"  compared to 43 percent who found him "businesslike" and "a quarter [who] described him as friendly.")

American Jews aren't buying the right-wing media's alarmism about Obama's views on Israel, and these media figures would rather attack the Jews than rethink their own arguments.

And, in addition, maybe they're smart enough to recognize that the right wing is full of scat, and Obama doesn't "stand against" Israel.

It may also have something to do with that famous Jewish emphasis on education and intellect which often leads to thinking for oneself. I can see how that would mystify rank and file Republicans.

I just don't understand the American right wing press. Are they morons or just willfully ignorant?

I am a proud Canadian. I am a proud Jew. I hate reading and hearing all the bs that comes out of Faux, Rush, Hannity Beck etc. Are these people daft? What part of 67 Borders with land swaps that are negotiated did they not understand? Have they put their political party ahead of the best interests of their country?

Personally, I sometines think that the US has lost its Moral Compass, and I don't think its just the Republicans. Some Dems can be just as willfully ignorat, just on a smaller scale. Of course that is just my opinion.

When I read comments regarding President Obama, I sometimes just want to vomit. It's one thing to disagree with his policies, but to attack him or his wife and children is despicable.

I guess the 1st Amendment gives people the right, and that is one thing, but to make up stories and lies about the Prezz is utterly disgusting.

This is my first post on MMFA, and all I can say is keep up the good work. Someone has to keep the other side honest. (is keeping neo-cons honest an oxymoron.)

Israel is basically Disneyland for the Christian right. They aren't so much concerned with broader Jewish issues or security for both sides. It's about a Bibleland theme park for wealthy American Christians who don't have to live there.

Thanks to the lack of emphasis on critical thinking in our abysmal public education system, there are enough non-thinking people in all of those groups that the Republicans can still draw votes from them. That is the reason that the "always right but never correct" wing of politics does everything it can to gut education every chance it gets. The more uneducated or undereducated a person is, the more likely that person is to vote Republiteahad.

I love how these mouthpieces act like "The Jews" are some sort of separate entity from the rest of the United States citizenry and by virtue of their religion must show allegiance to the "Israel" so beloved by conservative yakkers, an Israel that has no relation to the country and its complex relationship with Jews of many denominations around the world.

But hey, if you can attack Obama via some veiled anti-Semitism and vise versa, it's drinks all around!

I'm sure the Jewish community appreciates Shapiro taking on the burden of determining who is and is not a real Jew, especially since the criteria here is one's view on the conflict with the Palestinians. If you don't want Israel to stubbornly cling to land at the cost of peace, well, you're a JINO.

Umm, don't know if you read the article that you posted, because there was no attack there on Jews for not turning on Netanyahu. It wasn't actually even close to that.

As eweston said on here as well, they offered other viewpoints, such as attendees of the AIPAC conference who said that Jews should support Netanyahu not matter what.

It's called actually a fairly well balanced article. Noting that there are other Jewish organizations other than AIPAC (which, I agree, carries way too much weight and power in the US as a whole).

There were no attacks in the link you provided.

Obama has a lot of it to take on AIPAC. I admire him for doing so. Basically, Obama disrupted the linkage that the crazy right has formed between "peace" and Greater Israel. He made it clear: You can have Greater Israel and no peace or you can have peace, but no Greater Israel but you cannot have both. America should condition its "guarantee" on the creation of a Palestinian state utilizing the pre 67 borders as a guideline. You don't have to be a fascist to be a Jew. And Netanyahu, Begin, Sharon, Shamir... all fascists. Greater Israel has no more justice than Greater Rome or the Greater Reich today.

I think he gave the link he meant to. He just didn't expect anyone to actually cut and paste it and see that he was making up what it was about. See, when he posts something like that on sites like The Blahz, the people there simply assume that the tagline that he wrote is a correct assessment of the article he "linked" to, and run with it. It truly isn't HIS fault that we aren't brainless zombies like they are.

Isn't it funny that the right-wing media who are baffled at American Jews' failure to turn on President Obama over Israel are the same ones who get extremely angry that Latinos proudly display the flags of their home countries? When Latinos come to the USA, they are supposed to drop all ties to their homeland, but apparently Jews who have never been to Israel, let alone lived there, are supposed to support Israel (the Stolen Land) before America.

      Odd.

Of course, recognizing your country of ancestry is also OK if you're:

        Irish
        French
        Spanish

And so on and so forth, but if you're from South of the border, then you're supposed to forget where you came from.

Yep. Although, to be perfectly honest, I think that if you put ANYTHING in front of "American" when describing who you are, you should probably return to wherever it is that comes first. I am an American. I am not a German-American, I am not an Irish-American, I am not a Spanish-American, and I am not an African-American (all of those, and then some, are in my genetic heritage. Yes, I am a mutt).

I am an AMERICAN. I will defend America to my death. I will NOT defend Germany, Ireland, Spain, Africa, or any other country. Period.

Could be the fact that Jewish people like myself lost tremendous amounts of security during 8 years of Bush hell. I lost half my wealth during the Bush years. Before Bush, Gas was rarely higher that $2.15/gallon. Before Bush, my stocks continued to grow and grow. My house almost doubled in value the 8 years Clinton was in office.

That is why jewish folk won't vote for anybody like Bush, a Repiglican. The only people that made money during Bush years were big oil companies, military contractors like Boeing, Lockheed, Halliburton, Allied Signal, McDonnell Douglass, etc.

It is likely that those Jews are aware of President Obama's actual support for Israel.

Just because you push and challenge your ally to make peace, does not mean you won't help them or support them. Republican foreign policy is based on what we call " The Helen Keller" doctrine : absolutely blind to reality and deaf to reason.

I think that American Jews who support Obama believe two principal things: (i) That the President means it when he says that the American commitment to Israel's existence is unshakeable and (ii) that peace -- real peace -- is in the long run Israel's only real security and that the President, like so many before him, is trying to chase that elusive goal in the best way he knows how.

Why?, I am an American first. Issues that effect the American economy and security for America is most important to me. I also do support Israel's right to exists and Israel live in Peace.
